Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero has called Ange Postecoglou a “beautiful person” who has made an impact on him after their first season together at Tottenham. The 26-year-old Argentine is coming off the back of his best season for Spurs since joining in 2021, having shown consistency with his performances in the backline. Romero was the top scoring defender in the Premier League with five goals to his name and his discipline issues of previous campaigns were mostly eradicated, other than one red card in November against Chelsea. Postecoglou has consistently praised Romero this season and looked to him as the leader of the backline, the Australian making him a vice-captain when he joined last summer. The World Cup winner is now on international duty, looking to help Argentina retain their Copa America title as the tournament kicks off this month in the United States. Romero set up Angel Di Maria’s winning goal in Argentina’s 1-0 win against Ecuador this week and while on international duty he was asked about his first year with Postecoglou and a very different system at Tottenham as they finished fifth in the Premier League table.

“The coach is a beautiful person. He gave me a nice responsibility at the beginning of the season, which was to be vice-captain. We have a nice relationship and I thank him for the words he has said and the impact he has had on me”

The Spurs centre-back is looking forward to the tournament ahead of him and believes the Argentina camp is calm about the prospect of trying to retain the trophy under their star man Lionel Messi.

“We are preparing for this new challenge with the same enthusiasm and the same desire. It is not an extra pressure to be defending the title. It’s nice to arrive with this confidence. I think we are going to be up to par. You have to have the same head and humility. I see the group doing very well,” said Romero.

“Internally I think that the group is always hungry to continue winning things and that is the beautiful thing, what the older players transmit about wanting to continue being at the top. We are in a nice moment to do it again. It is a very difficult competition, but I see the group doing very well.”
