Graeme Souness’ side suffered a terrible campaign and was on verge of getting the sack on more than one occasion. He fell out with his players, the board, officials and the FA as well as the fans at times. His issues with Bruce Grobbelaar and John Barnes were well documented. But eventually, the board backed him at the end of 1992-93 season as well as in the transfer market.
Liverpool spent heavily in the transfer market to bring in Neil Ruddock, the centre back from Tottenham for £2.75 million, Nigel Clough in the attacking midfield from Nottingham Forest for £2.50 million and Julian Dicks the left-back from West Ham for £2 million. This was also the year when Robbie Fowler was promoted from the academy to the first-team squad.
The only notable from Liverpool squad was of Ronnie Rosenthal, the Israeli player who had apparently fallen out with Souness as well as Club’s treatment of the situation where Malaysian government did not allow Rosenthal to travel to the country since he was from Israel.
