QPR boss Gerry Francis insisted that Les Ferdinand had done enough with Rangers and England that season to deserve the player of the season award. Ferdinand had scored 24 goals in 40 matches for QPR and was an instrumental player for England that year as well. He had single-handedly kept QPR at pace with other clubs and the Rangers were set to finish fifth in the premier league table.
Gerry Francis said “Les deserves the player of the year, the fans thought so and the players thought so. He has had a tremendous season and hasn’t looked out of place for England either. He has been so crucial for us this season and hopefully we can end the season on a positive note. The fixtures have worked out nicely for us, though, because we have four tremendous matches left with Leeds, Arsenal, Villa and Sheffield Wednesday.”
