Youri Tielemans did not follow Leicester City’s kick-off plan and instead “gift-wrapped” a 97th-minute winner for Tottenham in the club’s jaw-dropping defeat.cCity gave up two goals in the final 90 seconds to toss away three points, with Tielemans coughing up possession from the restart to give Spurs the ball and allow Steven Bergwijn to score a 97th-minute winner.
Brendan Rodgers said: “It’s very disappointing. The last 90 seconds spoiled 93 minutes of really good work. You know you have to defend well with the quality they have. We scored two really good goals, but we conceded a disappointing equaliser, losing the duels we should have won. Then we were really really naive from the kick-off to concede so late in the game. There were lots of really good moments, but we gift-wrapped the goals, which you can’t do. Normally if a team does score, we go direct to see if we can catch the backline celebrating, we did it against Leeds, we did it against Manchester United, and in other games. You certainly don’t run through the middle of the pitch. Youri, he knows that. He was keen to get the ball forward as quickly as possible. That’s one with more experience, you have to settle for a point.”
Such a devastating loss may take more time to recover from, but Rodgers has said his team need to get over it in 24 hours so they can prepare for a meeting with Brighton on Sunday.
Brendan Rodgers said: “It’s football. It’s hugely disappointing, you look like you’re going to get three points, then you don’t get any. It hurts, but after 24 hours you’ve got to move on. We can look and analyse the game, see where we need to be better, but then we move on to another opportunity. The players gave everything, but we made two really poor decisions and it cost us.”
