#PLStories- Roberto De Zerbi sends Moises Caicedo message to Brighton fans after transfer saga #BHAFC

The midfielder will play against Bournemouth tomorrow after offers from Arsenal were rejected. Caicedo put out a social media statement, for which his agent has claimed at least some of the responsibility, saying he wished to leave the club. But De Zerbi has spoken to the player and says they are ready to put events of January behind them. The head coach said: “I want to speak to our fans because I want them to support him. “I don't want them to criticise him. “I love Moises. The people who work at Brighton love Moises. “He is a good guy. I don't know if he made a mistake or not but the transfer market is closed and the fans must follow me because I take responsibility for him and if, I say something clear about Moises, they have to believe me." De Zerbi is delighted to have Caicedo on board for the result of the season. “I don’t know,” replied the Italian boss when asked if Caicedo will depart Sussex before next season. “I want to be responsible about him because I believe in Moises. I don’t know the situation in the future but he’s a good guy and I want to defend him now. “In other times I spoke a different way for the other players but for Moises it’s different. “We need the performance of Moises and he’s a fantastic guy and so I don’t want to hear criticism or anything more.”

#PLStories- Roberto De Zerbi plans to build on getting a hard fought point at Leicester #BHAFC

Albion showed their boss they can push for European football – as they dropped points on the road. Evan Ferguson’s late header salvaged a 2-2 draw at Leicester City, which was the least they deserved. Kaoru Mitoma scored a brilliant goal for a Seagulls side who lost Adam Lallana to injury. The result ended their run of three successive away wins in Premier League and FA Cup. Bbut De Zerbi, who revealed ahead of the game he did not sleep after wins, said this draw had also left him with plenty to think about. The Albion head coach said: “I think I will sleep badly also with a draw but I am very proud of my players today. “We could have lost the game and to score the second goal was very important for us. “For us, it is a signal for the second part of the season. “I think we are able to fight for a high position. “I watched the games of Brighton and the other teams and I think we have to try. "The players now are sad for the result but it is important because they wanted to win. “I think we deserved to win but the point today is very important. It’s important how we fight for the result.” Albion fans are thinking of a European push. De Zerbi said: “I don’t know what will be the target but I think it is clear we are a good team.”

#PLStories- Roberto De Zerbi verdict after Brighton lose to Aston Villa #BHAFC

Roberto De Zerbi hit out at Aston Villa time-wasting as Albion went down at the Amex. The head coach was booked for his complaints as Villa protected a precious 2-1 lead. He offered more veiled criticism of two penalty decisions. Danny Ing scored from the spot to cancel out Alexis Mac Allister’s first-minute opener. Villa were protecting a lead given them by a deflected Ings shot when Lucas Digne appeared to foul Solly March. De Zerbi said: “If the games are 90 minutes, during the 90 minutes you have to play, you can’t play 45 or 44 minutes. “To lose is not a big problem. It is not a big problem to lose one game like with Villa we lost, but I would like to play normal time. “Not 90 minutes because it is not normal to play for 90 minutes but maybe 60 minutes no? “Yes, a lot of wasting time. Too much wasting time. I thought before I came to work in the Premier League. I thought in the Premier League the people were correct, also in Italy, also in Latin countries, but it is not like this. “I think the referee had to control the game. This work is his work. Not my work, not my players’ work, not our fans work. For this situation I was angry and frustrated.” VAR Jarred Gillet reviewed the incident involving March. De Zerbi said: “About this particular situation, I don’t like to speak or like to focus, but you have to watch again. “Both penalties. First for Villa and second for us, because also, the first penalty it is not so clear.”
Adam Lallana

#PLStories- Adam Lallana’s verdict on De Zerbi’s Brighton impact #BHAFC

Adam Lallana says he was blown away by Roberto De Zerbi’s tactical ideas. The Albion midfielder has been hailed as his teacher on the pitch by the head coach. But Lallana says he is learning a lot himself from the Italian on the training ground. Speaking to TalkSPORT he said: “He is very tactical on the training pitch. “There’s lot of phases of play in deep build-up, mid build-up and in the attacking third. Very structured “You’ve got to be disciplined in where he wants you and he gives you all the options. “It’s nothing that I’ve experienced before in my career in how he coaches. “He is very, very hands-on. “Before he came in, I thought I’d had a great experience with the managers I’ve worked for. “Then he enters the building and I’m blown away by his ideas and how he sees the game. “It’s another string to my bow in terms of experience and just keep learning. “It’s incredible to be 34 and still think you know nothing in the game.” Albion failed to win in De Zerbi’s first five games in charge but have now put together successive victories. Lallana said: “It was a tough first three or four weeks. “We didn’t win in the first five and I could just see it in his face. “It wasn’t his choice that Graham left. “It took a bit of time probably to get buy-in from every player because there were players who were used to doing things a bit differently under Graham and we were getting huge success doing it that way. “There was a bit of a transition period and we suffered with not winning in five games. “That can’t have been easy for Roberto coming to a new league, new language and not getting a win in five games. “I was extremely made up for him we got back-to-back wins because it took a little bit of pressure off.”

#PLStories- Roberto De Zerbi admits that win over Chelsea means a lot for Brighton fans and his staff #BHAFC

For a moment, it seemed Roberto De Zerbi had made a mistake in his press conference after this thunderous afternoon at the Amex. We should have known better. Albion’s current head coach hardly put a foot wrong all day as side beat Chelsea 4-1. Eight weeks (minus one day) after seeing Graham Potter’s side smash Leicester 5-2, Albion fans enjoyed the thrills of goals and a win again. They were eight turbulent weeks (minus one day) since Potter had turned to the West Stand, arms aloft, to join their celebrations of Alexis Mac Allister’s majestic free-kick with almost the last kick. All seemed well with the Albion world on that Sunday afternoon. Little were we to know what was to follow three days later (although one wonders whether some at Stamford Bridge already had an inkling). So why did De Zerbi say eight tough months as he started an answer to reporters? You mean weeks, Roberto. Easy mistake to make in a foreign language. Then, as he continued, all became clear – as did just what this opportunity at the Amex means to him and his staff. With reference to his time at Shakhtar Donetsk, which was cut short by war, he said: “Today I am very happy for myself, for my staff because we have been through eight really tough months. “I had already a team, a great team that Putin decided to take away from me. “In this moment I have found another team. I have to be thankful with the players of Brighton, with the club, how they have welcomed me and how I have felt straight away since the first moment that they trust me. “To find again a family, an atmosphere that is letting you feel like part of the environment, it’s something very nice and I have to be very thankful to Brighton.” There’s some perspective for you. But what happens on the pitch, and off it, at your football club still matters. The most important of the unimportant things, as they say. On Saturday, eight weeks (minus one day) later, Albion turned a page. The De Zerbi tenure, which stumbled out of the starting blocks in terms of wins due to good play not being turned into goals, is now well and truly up and running. With a first win for the new boss, a first league win for the club over Chelsea, the first goals under De Zerbi at the Amex. And a landmark occasion for fans and players alike. There have been smoother baton handovers, admittedly. But, on Saturday evening, it felt like they had taken a huge step. Potter and his staff, including Marc Cucurella, were given a torrid welcome and were played off the park. Or, if you want to be precise, Chelsea and the way they have bought a lot of Albion’s hard work off the peg – at a price, of course – were booed, with Potter and colleagues the vehicle for that. They were then buried by goals from two of Potter’s former players and two of his current team. Surely no one denies how he took Albion from fourth bottom to fourth top. Four just happened to be the magic number again when he returned. He might have had an inkling of what could be coming. We saw it under his command late last season. That was when his Albion side were playing good stuff without getting wins. Not at home, anyway. It felt like someone was going to get a hammering. Then a fragile Manchester United came south and everything fell into place. This was similar – except the damage was done earlier in the game and Chelsea now are better than United were then. It was nicely set up for a home win but that did not mean the script would be followed. Football does not always work like that. De Zerbi, who did not even know his line-up until the day of the game, used Leandro Trossard as centre-forward, got attacking width from the recalled Pervis Estupinan and did something Potter himself had trialled , putting Pascal Gross at right-back or wing-back, depending on your reading of it. Team and crowd pressed with a vigour and force which brought back memories of a play-off against Sheffield Wednesday, long since held up as the night Albion and their crowd started a game in such a whirlwind manner. But this time, after two goal-line clearances by Thiago Silva, they got the early goal as Kaoru Mitoma’s clever pass released Trossard to show off dancing feet, a cool head and precise finish. Bedlam. Absolute bedlam. Where would the goals come from apart from Trossard? That which doubled the lead bore some resemblance to Lewis Dunk’s on that night against Wednesday. But this time it was by Ruben Loftus-Cheek who kneed into his own net from a Solly March set-piece. Robert Sanchez produced two super saves from Conor Gallagher before Trevor Chalobah prodded into his own goal when trying to prevent Estupinan’s low cross reaching Mitoma. Chelsea changed things at half-time and got the early goal they needed as Kai Havertz, their most dangerous player, headed home a Gallagher cross. That was the time when it might have gone wrong for an Albion side who did not appear to have great depth on their bench. But they stood firm, Sanchez made two more saves and the presence and running of Julio Enciso gave them an injection when they needed it. It was his shot, then follow-up when he might have passed, which led to Gross rounding things off in added time. The Amex crowd erupted again. It was an afternoon which meant so much to so many – for different reasons, as it turned out. Albion: Sanchez; Gross, Dunk, Webster, Estupinan; March, Mac Allister, Caicedo; Lallana (Encisco 64), Mitoma (Lamptey 71); Trossard (Sarmiento 87). Alexis Mac Allister

#PLStories- Alexis Mac Allister believes Brighton not far away under De Zerbi #BHAFC

Alexis Mac Allister believes Brighton are 'not far away at all' under Roberto De Zerbi, after signing a new three-year contract at the club this week. The 23-year-old midfielder agreed a deal to keep him at the Amex until 2025, with the option of another year, having become one of the most important players for the new head coach. And although they are yet to taste victory in five games under the Italian, Mac Allister feels they are close - and might even get it against Graham Potter's Chelsea this weekend. "Everyone can see what we're trying to do under Roberto and as players we really like the ideas he has and what he brings to the team," Mac Allister told the club website. "We need some time to understand his plans even more to win football matches, but we are not far away at all. "We've been a bit unlucky in the last three games but really like working under him and we will hopefully get that first win on Saturday. "It's going to be a tough match, but we're excited and looking forward to it." The meeting with in-form Chelsea comes a week on from a 3-1 defeat against defending Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad. Many observers felt Albion put in their best performance yet under De Zerbi, with Mac Allister showing signs of getting forward from a deeper role. And the Argentine admitted he is happy to play wherever he is asked to, with regular action key to his decision to signing his contract. "The most important thing for me is to play," he added. "It doesn't matter what position or what role, I just love being out there. "I have found a new position as a six and I really enjoy it. I used to play there in Argentina and enjoy playing deeper because I see more of the ball. "But I like playing as a 10 or an eight as well. It doesn't matter to me, I just want to help the team and help my teammates win the game." Having arrived at the club in January 2019, Mac Allister is feeling very settled in his surroundings and had lots of thanks to give for that support. He said: "The people who work here are really supportive and the club wants to keep developing. It’s exciting and why I signed a new deal.  "My teammates have been amazing ever since my first day. Dunky, Adam Lallana, Steeley – these are just some of the people who have helped me a lot. I’m really grateful for their support. "I am so grateful to the fans. They are amazing every time we play, whether we are at home or away.  "I want to say thank you very much for the support they’ve shown me, I’ve felt it every day I’ve been here. We will all try to get a win [against Chelsea] on Saturday for them."

#PLStories- Roberto De Zerbi rates Brighton’s Moises Caicedo highly #BHAFC

Moises Caicedo has been told he can be one of the best midfielders in Europe. Now Roberto De Zerbi is looking to get the most of his talents. Caicedo has another chance to impress as Albion take on champions Manchester City at the Etihad today (3pm). De Zerbi has tweaked the midfield pairing of Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentina international revealed he has been told to have at least 100 touches of the ball per game, as reported in The Argus this week. De Zerbi said: “Caicedo is improving so much the quality of his play. “In your newspaper you produced a statistic for the touches on the ball by Mac Allister. “For Caicedo, it is the same. “He has almost tripled his touches of the ball in a match. “Caicedo for me could become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and in Europe.” Asked what impressed him, De Zerbi said: “Caicedo is a top player with and without the ball. “There are many players who are very good with the ball but without it in defensive spaces are not so good. “Others in the defensive space are top but with the ball, there are some problems. “With Caicedo, I don’t see anything not at the top level. “And he is only 20, he is very young, so he can learn and improve more. He has no limit.” Caicedo had 99 touches in the 1-0 defeat by Tottenham and 80 against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday compared to 53 in the win over Leicester, which was the last game before the change of management.
Alexis Mac Allister

#PLStories- Alexis Mac Allister relishes 100-touch target under Brighton’s manager Roberto De Zerbi #BHAFC

Alexis Mac Allister has revealed the three-figure target which is keeping him at the heart of the action for Albion. The midfielder has been told to get at least 100 touches of the ball per game in Roberto De Zerbi’s system. His 137 involvements against Tottenham was the second most by any Premier League player this season, Mac Allister’s position has not changed under De Zerbi but the demands have. He told The Argus: “The first week they were here, Roberto’s assistant coach told me, ‘You have to touch the ball 100, 120 times in a match’. “I said, ‘You are crazy, that’s impossible’. And then you can see that I do it. “It’s the way Roberto wants me to play. “I am really happy because I like to be on the ball every time. “But we need to win, that is the most important thing.” Mac Allister says he has been given extra responsibility as he accepts possession in deep areas, often with opponents close by. He added: “We know he wants to build up from the back and then have that superiority at the front. “Try to play between Moises and me and then find whoever is playing as a ten – Pascal, Solly, Leo, Lallana or Danny, “That is the idea. “I think you can see it and we are happy with that way to play football. “But, like every football player, we want to win and we will try it again on Saturday.” Albion face the ultimate test as they go to champions Manchester City. They look to end a run of three blanks and Mac Allister said: “The goals will come. We have to stick with the way we want to play and we are fully behind Roberto.”

#PLStories- Brighton Technical director David Weir reveals Roberto De Zerbi’s work at Sassuolo was reason for appointing him #BHAFC

Roberto De Zerbi took modest Sassuolo into the upper reaches of Serie A. De Zerbi has been named Albion head coach on a four-year deal. Albion are fourth in the Premier League, having finished in the top half last season. Sassuolo were similar gatecrashers among the big spenders, twice finishing eighth when De Zerbi was in charge. Technical director David Weir said: “Roberto has shown his undoubted ability with his work in Italy and Ukraine, and what he achieved at Sassuolo certainly stands out. “In his short spell with Shakhtar he enjoyed further success, leading the club to cup success and topping the Ukrainian league before the war brought an abrupt halt to his time there. “We are delighted to welcome Roberto and we look forward to introducing him to our squad as well as providing all the support he needs to introduce his coaching philosophy and help the players continue their brilliant start to the season.”
