The agent of Donny van de Beek has taken a swipe at Manchester United, claiming the club blocked a transfer for the Netherlands international. Van de Beek has struggled since moving to the club from Ajax last year, failing to establish himself as a regular in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting line-up. That has led to plenty of frustrations across the board, with former United striker Dimitar Berbatov dubbing the deal as one of the worst transfers ever. An exit has been touted and, speaking on Deadline Day, the midfielder’s agent, Guido Albers, expressed disappointment that a transfer could not be completed.
Guido Albers said: “There was a lot of interest from Italy, Germany, England, so that looked good. But you need co-operation of the club, and it looked like they would, but ultimately they didn’t. Disappointed, but also assuring for him, so that he will get his chance, and will get his minutes, but this will become clear in due time. He’s been promised that before, but we came to a clear agreement about this with the club, so we have all faith that it will happen now.”
Albers was then asked whether Van de Beek was happy with the situation or disappointed by the interviewer, to which he replied:
Guido Albers said: “I won’t say. But everybody who knows Donny knows he loves the game and he wants to be on the pitch every week. So from this answer you can probably tell what he wanted most.”
Solskjaer said last week that Van de Beek ‘will get his chances’ this season at United. Van de Beek is yet to feature for United this season, having been an unused substitute for each of the club’s three Premier League matches so far. His lack of game time with United led to exclusion from Louis van Gaal’s first Holland squad when it was named on Friday. The former United boss spoke to him on Thursday about his decision and has said the former Ajax midfielder needs to be playing more often if he’s to force his way back into the squad.
