Leicester City were “nowhere near the standard” Brendan Rodgers has come to expect from his team in their win over Norwich. City held on for their first away victory of the new Premier League campaign at Carrow Road, Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton scoring either side of a Teemu Pukki penalty, with the Canaries going on to have a goal disallowed with two further gilt-edged chances put wide. The win marked a response from the 4-1 thumping by West Ham on Monday, but Rodgers was still not best pleased with the performance.
Brendan Rodgers said: “I’m delighted with the three points, and we showed resilience and a spirit towards the end when the balls were coming into the box. But we nowhere near the standard and level. We’ve not been at our best so far but we have won two of our three games. That will come over the course of the season, with a little bit more time and fitness. It was a difficult game, so I’m delighted with three points. I have no doubts about this team. We can’t win games just on talent alone. We were disappointed with Monday, but the fans will go home happy after seeing that resilience. We were not at our free-flowing best, but the character and spirit pleases us.”
City’s winner came courtesy of Marc Albrighton, the winger coming in as the first change Rodgers has made to his starting line-up since the Premier League season began in place of the suspended Ayoze Perez. That decision was justified with the title-winner’s late strike to the bottom corner.
Brendan Rodgers added: “I’m delighted for Marc, his work-rate was very good and he put in a real shift to get up and down the line, then get up there and score a goal. It’s a great strike and we’re all delighted for him. He’s always ready, whether he starts or comes on.”
