Pep Guardiola once again refused to be drawn on Harry Kane’s future at Tottenham, but perhaps he’s offered a hint over Manchester City’s stance on signing a big-name striker. When asked about Kane in his pre-match press conference for City’s clash with Everton, Guardiola once again insisted he wouldn’t comment on a player from another club. So perhaps this latest revelation from Guardiola is completely unrelated, given that he says he would love to have a prolific goalscorer in his team when asked about how City have spread their goals around this season. Ilkay Gundogan is the top scorer with 17 in all competitions, with Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus all scoring 13 or more.
Pep Guardiola said: “I’d love to have a guy score 50 goals, honestly I would love it. At the same time I don’t like putting all the pressure on one player. Even at Barcelona Messi scored every season 50 goals. In the first season, I had Thierry Henry who scored a lot, Samuel Eto’o scored a lot – what a striker. When you are just to win titles, especially the Premier League with one guy you are not going to win the Premier League. The statistics speak for themselves. You need three guys more than 12-15 goals to arrive to be competitors. When you have a guy who can score 25-30 it helps a lot, honestly. We try for the way we play everyone being involved to score goals. Raheem scores, Riyad especially, Gundogan especially this season, Phil Foden has qualities in front of goal, Sergio and Gabriel. As much players we have with this quality, the much better we’ll be.”
