If relegation is indeed to be West Brom’s fate this season, then it won’t be due to a lack of effort from all concerned, Sam Allardyce insists. What he wants in the short term is to beat Wolves and to take the fight against the drop as deep into the season as they can.

Sam Allardyce said: “I’d be more upset for the club than I would be for myself. Yes, I would be disappointed to lose my record of always having kept a club up, even though I have gone in under difficult circumstances, but all I can say is that the lads have tried their best up to now. We have tried our best – myself and all the coaching staff and the background staff. We have all given our all to get the players to maintain our Premier League status. We might well fall short but it hasn’t been for the want of trying. We keep going and we can keep our hopes alive by beating Wolves, so let’s go and do that. I’d hate to go into the last few games with our fate already sealed.”
