Roy Keane had made a plea for breathing space as speculation about his contractual negotiations with Brian Clough ran off the scale.

Roy Keane said “I’m perfectly happy where I am at the moment and I wish people would respect that position. I’m in no hurry about a new contract. I have no reason to rush into a contract when I have 18 months to make my mind up.”

Various figures were suggested for Keane’s new salary at the City Ground once the deal was done around £3000 to £6500 a month. But Keane was in the driving seat aware that Forest must settle soon or risk a similar scenario to the one which saw Sampdoria grab an out of contract Walker for a paltry £1.5 million.
