Leeds United’s efforts to secure Paixao from Feyenoord for approximately £30.3 million were thwarted last year when the player opted for a move to Marseille, attracted by the club’s Champions League qualification. Despite a successful season in France, Paixao is now on the radar of Italian giants Roma, who are eager to sign the promising talent. With Marseille facing financial difficulties, they are reportedly open to selling Paixao for around £30 million, even though they invested more in him last season.
Paixao said: “I feel good. I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great atmosphere. It’s fantastic, incredible. OM is a big club in Europe, it’s really good. I’m happy.”
Paixao’s decision to join Marseille instead of Leeds was influenced by the opportunity to play in the Champions League. However, the player’s future now seems to lie away from France, with Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini expressing significant interest in the South American forward. Meanwhile, Marseille’s willingness to part ways with Paixao underscores their pressing financial concerns.
Leeds United, under the guidance of manager Daniel Farke, managed to strengthen their squad during the summer transfer window despite missing out on Paixao. The club brought in forwards Lukas Nmecha, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Noah Okafor from Wolfsburg, Everton, and AC Milan, respectively. This trio contributed a combined 30 goals, with Calvert-Lewin standing out by netting 15 Premier League goals, helping Leeds secure their Premier League status with a 14th-place finish.
Daniel Farke said: “Leeds have had one good season in the Premier League in the last 25 years, the [first] season with Marcelo [Bielsa], and we didn’t build on it. You have to develop and you have to evolve. This is what I stand for, so it’s important that we speak internally together and very trustfully together.”
Farke emphasized the importance of development and evolution within the club, highlighting the need for internal communication and trust. Leeds United’s ability to retain their Premier League status despite challenges reflects the club’s resilience and determination to build on past successes.
As the transfer window approaches, Leeds will be keen to continue strengthening their squad, while Roma looks to capitalize on Marseille’s financial woes by acquiring Paixao. The coming months will be crucial for all clubs involved as they navigate the complexities of the transfer market.
