Cole Palmer
Chelsea’s playmaker Cole Palmer, along with Manchester United defender and several other high-profile names, faced a surprising exclusion from the England squad. While this decision has sparked debates, Roy Keane insists that the responsibility lies with the players themselves. This unexpected development, however, could turn into a silver lining for Chelsea, as Palmer will have his first summer off in four years, potentially benefiting from the rest and recovery period.
Roy Keane said: “Every time we do an England game, we speak a lot about players who have been left out or in terms of the squad are left out of the starting XI. But I think if you can’t get into a squad of 26, that’s on you.”
Calum McFarlane said: “In life and in football, especially in football, I’ve learnt that you need to take every setback as a positive. There’s going to be lots of them. There’s going to be losses, there’s going to be moments like this. If you have the right mindset, you can turn it into a positive.”
Palmer’s exclusion from the England squad means he will miss the World Cup campaign, which includes matches against Croatia, Ghana, and Panama, along with a friendly against Costa Rica. This break comes after a grueling schedule that saw him participate in the Club World Cup, Euro 2024, and the European Under-21 Championship in 2023. Former interim head coach Calum McFarlane has urged Palmer to view this omission as an opportunity for growth.
The young midfielder’s recent struggles with injuries, including a groin injury and a broken toe, have limited his playing time. Despite these setbacks, Palmer’s absence from the squad is attributed more to his form when fit rather than his physical condition. McFarlane emphasized that the decision was made by the England manager and is not a reflection of Palmer’s potential or the club’s belief in him.
With Xabi Alonso set to take over as Chelsea’s manager on July 1, Palmer’s time off could allow him to recharge and prepare for the upcoming season. This period of rest may ultimately prove beneficial, enabling him to return to the pitch with renewed vigor and focus, potentially making a significant impact under Alonso’s guidance.
