Louis Saha has expressed concerns regarding Sunderland’s readiness for European competitions, urging the club to focus on strategic player recruitment this summer. The former Sunderland striker emphasized the potential “danger” posed by a congested European fixture schedule and the importance of squad depth.
Louis Saha said: “They [Sunderland] have done really well because it was not easy. So they made really good signings, and they’ve brought a style that fits the Premier League standard straight away. They have played with the intensity, the high pressing, the quality going forward as well. They have built a cauldron. A cauldron means that the Stadium of Light was really hard to play at. I remember from my time.”
Louis Saha continued: “Now it’s another big step because Europe is dangerous as well. If you are not able to build a squad that is big enough to play Thursday/Saturday every week, then you will be in danger. Sunderland have not got a good enough squad at the moment. I think they have good players, but not a squad that can maintain the quality for the Premier League and Europe. So for that reason, Sunderland will need to invest wisely, to get some good deals, not spend stupid money, but just good players who know how to manage the season.”
Saha’s comments highlight the pressing need for Sunderland to bolster their squad depth to handle the dual demands of domestic and European fixtures. The former player praised the club’s recent signings and their adaptation to the Premier League’s high standards, but he stressed the importance of strategic investments to avoid the pitfalls of a crowded schedule. As Sunderland looks to compete on multiple fronts, wise recruitment will be crucial to sustaining their performance levels throughout the season.
