Nottingham Forest
Danilo, the Brazilian midfielder, made a pivotal move back to his homeland last summer by joining Botafogo after spending two-and-a-half years with Nottingham Forest. His departure from the Reds followed a challenging 2024/25 season, during which he suffered a severe ankle injury on the opening day. This setback hindered his ability to reclaim a regular starting position, with Elliot Anderson securing a spot in the team. Initially determined to fight for his place at Forest, Danilo eventually opted to return to Brazil, driven by his aspirations to make Brazil’s World Cup squad.
Danilo said: “It was very difficult. I have the age to be in Europe, but my serious injury made me lose my place at Nottingham. At first, I didn’t want to return to Brazil. I wanted to turn things around and shine, but this is football and there are things you can’t control. I came back (to Brazil) worried that I hadn’t made the right decision. It was a project built around the World Cup and then I suffered more injuries that got in the way. The fear I had beforehand became reality because I wasn’t being called up and I couldn’t get a run of games. But from January onwards, I managed to get back to my best physically and mentally and show my football.”
Danilo’s reflections highlight the challenges he faced during his time at Nottingham Forest and the subsequent decision to return to Brazil. Despite initial doubts about his move, he managed to regain his form and confidence, becoming a key player for Botafogo and earning recognition with the national team. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Premier League giants Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle United reportedly monitoring his progress.
The midfielder’s journey underscores the unpredictability of a football career, where injuries and team dynamics can significantly impact a player’s trajectory. Danilo’s resilience and determination to overcome these obstacles have positioned him as a potential candidate for a return to the Premier League, where he could once again showcase his talents on a larger stage.
