Ethan Ampadu
Leeds United are set to focus on securing the future of their captain, Ethan Ampadu, as he enters the final 12 months of his contract. The 25-year-old has been instrumental in Leeds’ successful return to the Premier League, earning accolades such as the club player and players’ player of the year. Manager Daniel Farke has identified Ampadu as his most crucial player, underscoring the need to retain the squad’s core amidst potential interest in key players.
Jermaine Beckford said: “For me it’s vital. You look at what he’s been able to achieve since he signed for the club. The steps he’s made to improve himself on a personal level, but also those around him. And that’s the sign of a true leader. He does dictate play by being vocal, but it’s what he does off the board as well. Off the pitch, he leads by example. His work ethic, his work rate, his determination, his drive. The way he puts his body on the line, he’s not afraid to get kicked in the head. And that’s just part of being the leader, being the guy that everybody looks up to. And the respect he gets all over the place is justified. For me, that has to be the first signing of the summer.”
Ampadu’s leadership, both on and off the pitch, has been crucial to Leeds’ progress under Farke. Acquired from Chelsea for £7 million in 2023, his contributions have been invaluable. Beckford, speaking to Leeds Live, emphasized the importance of Ampadu’s contract renewal as the first priority for the club this summer.
In addition to Ampadu, Pascal Struijk’s contract situation also requires attention. The centre-back, who has been with Leeds for six years, is also nearing the end of his contract. Struijk’s performances have attracted interest, and Beckford advocates for securing his future to prevent any exit speculation.
Jermaine Beckford added: “Similar to Ethan, you look at the quality he [Struijk] possesses, how well he’s done back in the Premier League as well. Very strong, very organised. I use the word discipline. He’s quite robust as well, so I love the guy. I would like to see him stay for another couple of years.”
As Leeds United prepare for the upcoming season, the focus on retaining key players like Ampadu and Struijk is seen as vital for maintaining the team’s competitive edge in the Premier League.
