Pep Guardiola
Pep Guardiola is set to step down as Manchester City manager after the club’s final Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa, marking the end of a decade-long era filled with success and innovation. The Spaniard, who has secured 20 trophies during his tenure, will take a break from coaching, with former City assistant boss Enzo Maresca poised to take over the reins.
Pep Guardiola said: “We didn’t give Foden a new contract by accident. He is the only player that can’t be sold under any circumstances, the only one. Not even for 500m euros. Phil’s going nowhere, Phil IS City. We won’t be signing anyone else for that position. When David Silva leaves, we know exactly who our new magician will be.”
Guardiola’s tenure at Manchester City has been characterized by his commitment to developing young talent, with Phil Foden being a prime example. The homegrown playmaker was identified by Guardiola as a future star early in his career, even before Foden had firmly established himself in the first team. Guardiola’s vision for Foden was clear, seeing him as the successor to City legend David Silva.
Pep Guardiola said: “One thing is clear, Foden has a place in City’s first team. I’d be interested to see if a different manager would have given him his chance to develop or loaned him out. I don’t like leaving him out of certain games but must think of the whole squad.”
Foden, reflecting on his time under Guardiola, expressed gratitude for the impact the manager has had on his development.
Phil Foden said: “To play with him now for so many years has been a blessing. He’s certainly helped my game. I’m really happy that he’s still here at the moment and let’s see what happens at the end of the season. Hopefully, he can be here next season.”
Despite Foden’s hopes, it has been confirmed that Guardiola will not return for the next season. This news comes during a challenging period for Foden, who was recently left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad, despite being praised by Tuchel for his performances in recent international friendlies.
Thomas Tuchel said: “Phil was excellent in camp for us. He was not only excellent in training, but also off training. He was open, he was in good spirits. And it hurt me a lot, actually, to call him and to tell him this decision.”
As Guardiola prepares to leave Manchester City, his legacy of success and player development will undoubtedly endure, with Phil Foden standing as a testament to his influence and vision.
