Chelsea will visit the Stadium of Light on Sunday as they aim to conclude a memorable season on a high note. Interim manager Calum McFarlane has urged his players to give ‘one more push’ in their quest for European qualification. A positive result against Sunderland could secure Chelsea a place in either the Europa Conference League or Europa League next season. This match marks the final game of McFarlane’s second temporary stint as manager, and he is determined to end it with a flourish by securing a top-eight finish.
Sunderland, under the guidance of Regis Le Bris, are also in contention for a top-eight spot. A victory over Chelsea, combined with favorable results elsewhere, would see them qualify for European competition for only the second time in their history. McFarlane, however, remains confident in his team’s ability to achieve the necessary result.
Calum McFarlane said: “Yeah, it’s going to be a great game. Both teams need to win as well. Sunderland have had a brilliant season. They’re a really good side, really challenging side, causing you problems. So yeah, we need one more push, one more big game, three points and hopefully get ourselves up that table. You said Sunderland need a win. There’s no point thinking about that really. We knew from the beginning of the season that we’d have Sunderland on the last day of the season. So we need to face what’s in front of us. We’re more than capable of going there and winning that game, but we know we have to be at our best to get three points because they’re a very good side.”
In preparation for the crucial match, Chelsea received a triple boost as Levi Colwill, Joao Pedro, and England international Reece James all participated in training sessions this week. However, McFarlane noted that a final decision on James’s involvement is still pending due to his recent workload.
Calum McFarlane said: “Reece has trained today. We’re playing a day by day with Reece. He’s fit, he’s in good condition. We just know that we have to manage Reece correctly over the last couple of games. He played a lot of minutes in the final. I’ll go back to it, it’s a tough game. It’s a really good side, so it’s going to take a lot out of you. We didn’t want to risk him on Tuesday. We felt like we had enough to see the game out, which was correct. We’re hoping to have Reece back on Sunday.”
Chelsea’s visit to Sunderland is set to be a thrilling encounter as both teams have everything to play for. With European dreams on the line, McFarlane’s side will need to be at their best to overcome a resilient Sunderland team. The outcome of this match could have significant implications for both clubs as they aim to secure their place in European competition next season.
