JJ Gabriel, a promising 15-year-old talent, has emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in the country after an outstanding season with Manchester United’s Under-18s, scoring 23 goals in as many league games. Following a narrow defeat in the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City, Gabriel took to Instagram to celebrate his latest achievement and hint at a potential inclusion in United’s pre-season squad.
JJ Gabriel said: “It’s a great honour to be awarded the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year. Thank you to everyone at @manutd.”
Michael Carrick said: “He is not allowed [to be part of a first-team squad on a matchday]. He’s too young. JJ’s doing really well. We’ve got some really good players in the academy and we try and get the younger players up [with the main group] as much as we can. We’re always trying to give them that exposure. JJ is a big talent, it is pretty obvious and he has had a good season for U18s. We think an awful lot of him.”
Gabriel’s impressive performances have already seen him train with the first team on multiple occasions, highlighting the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent. Interim manager Michael Carrick, who is expected to sign a two-year deal as the permanent manager, has been vocal about Gabriel’s potential, having attended several youth matches to monitor his progress.
United’s pre-season campaign kicks off with a match against Wrexham in Finland on July 18, followed by a trip to Norway to face Rosenborg. The team will conclude their Scandinavian tour with a game against Atletico Madrid in Sweden on August 1. The upcoming World Cup presents further opportunities for United’s younger players, as many first-team members are anticipated to be called up for international duty.
The club’s focus on developing a pathway to the first team for academy players like Gabriel reflects their long-term vision. With Sky broadcasting over 1,400 live matches across various leagues, including the Premier League, fans will have ample opportunity to witness the emergence of United’s next generation of stars.
