Merlin Rohl
Everton’s quest for European football suffered a setback as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland, extending their winless streak to six matches. The loss leaves the Blues’ hopes of securing a spot in Europe hanging by a thread, dependent on a series of unlikely outcomes on the final day of the season.
Merlin Rohl said: “It was a big opportunity for us. We had opportunities in the last games, but this one was perhaps the last opportunity to get back in the race for Europe. We didn’t get the win today and it’s disappointing, especially on a day like this – the last home game for Seamus Coleman. Sometimes this is football, but we couldn’t get another goal. Football is always so tough and sometimes you win the games by only a margin, and the last few games we couldn’t get the win, and that’s disappointing.”
Merlin Rohl added: “I always try to look at what I can control and what our team can control, that is, playing our best and trying to win the next game and be better than we were today. We need to try to be better defensively and don’t concede as many goals as we have today and we have been in the last couple of games.”
Despite the recent struggles, Rohl’s performances have been a bright spot for Everton. The 23-year-old midfielder, who joined the club in a deal reportedly worth £18 million, has impressed in recent outings, including a thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City. His return to the starting lineup has been marked by a renewed sense of gratitude and determination.
Merlin Rohl continued: “I had a run where I wasn’t playing, and I think it humbles you in quite a way that you always try to be grateful and not look into the future and say, ‘I want this and that’. I want to play all the time and just do my best. I just try to work as hard as possible, and the manager trusts me, and in the last couple of games he has trusted me, and it has been great. I am so grateful to be on the pitch and I don’t care what position, and I don’t care about whatever happens.”
Rohl’s attitude and adaptability have been crucial for Everton as they navigate a challenging period. With the season drawing to a close, the midfielder’s focus remains on improving the team’s defensive solidity and striving for better results. As Everton aim to end their winless run, Rohl’s commitment and positive outlook could prove vital in their pursuit of a strong finish.
