Pep Guardiola
As Manchester City celebrated their FA Cup victory, speculation swirled around the futures of key figures within the club. With both Bernardo Silva and John Stones expected to depart this summer, the triumph may also mark the last trophy Pep Guardiola claims with City. This speculation was further fueled during a post-match interview with Laura Woods, where Guardiola’s response to rumors about his future left many wondering.
Pep Guardiola said: “What rumours?” When pressed further by Woods, he humorously concluded the conversation with: “Have a lovely evening!”
The light-hearted exchange sparked laughter among the panel, which included Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, and former City goalkeeper Joe Hart. As Guardiola exited, Gerrard praised Woods for her bold questioning, while Hart quipped, “Laura, you nailed him!” Woods responded, acknowledging the necessity of the question: “I have to ask! I think I’d get fired if I didn’t ask the question.”
Pep Guardiola reflected: “Five finals in the last 10 years, we won three, lost two, that’s quite decent I would say. I think we had chances [to score more] but against Colwill, James and Caicedo… they are so, so good. Fernandez and Cole were dangerous. Second half we were better. First half we had the chance with Antoine but they were better. We found the goal. I had the feeling that last season, against Crystal Palace and the previous season against Manchester United, we were better than today but in football, sometimes this happens. I’m really pleased for the guys.”
Guardiola also took a moment to joke with Woods, an Arsenal supporter, about the Premier League race, saying, “We’re still alive in the Premier League, I’m sorry Laura!” He praised the impact of winter transfers Marc and Antoine, while expressing regret over leaving deserving players out of the squad.
Pep Guardiola continued: “I left six players out in the stands and don’t let them play. Even now after many, many years it’s difficult to swallow. Not just John [Stones], all of them. But at the end it’s a business and you have to do what you believe.”
Guardiola acknowledged the challenge posed by Chelsea, highlighting the quality and preparation of their opponents. Despite their inconsistency, he noted that in a final, “anything can happen.”
As City prepares to resume Premier League duties against Bournemouth, the title race remains intense. Arsenal, facing Burnley a day earlier, could set the stage for a dramatic final day if they secure victory. With the Premier League title still in contention, City’s focus will now shift to securing crucial points.
