The next Chelsea manager will face crucial decisions at Stamford Bridge, particularly regarding the future of Jorrel Hato. The 20-year-old defender, who joined the Blues from Ajax for £37 million, has become a key figure in Chelsea’s backline despite a challenging start in west London. As Chelsea shortlists candidates, including Xabi Alonso, for the managerial role, Hato’s development and role in the team remain central topics of discussion.
Jaap Stam said: “Jorrel Hato is a very talented player. When I saw him play as a centre-back when Liam Rosenior was there, I was quite impressed. I think he even played a big game against Man City, from what I recall. He needs to be quick, which he is, and he’s quite aggressive in his style of play. He can also play as a left-back, where he played for a longer period at Ajax. It’s a shame, but that’s how Chelsea operates, bringing in young players, not always giving them an opportunity, and then maybe selling them on when they do well. It’s a shame for a player like him because he needs to play and improve by playing a lot of games. Hopefully, he’ll have a bigger next season and a greater impact. At Chelsea, when a new manager arrives, they need to perform and be successful immediately. I don’t always agree with that.”
Hato’s journey at Chelsea has been marked by limited opportunities under former head coach Enzo Maresca, who cited the physicality and intensity of the Premier League as challenges for the young defender. Despite being identified as a versatile option across the backline, Hato was often sidelined during the early weeks of the season. However, since Maresca’s departure, Hato has become a regular starter, featuring in seven of Chelsea’s last nine Premier League matches.
As Chelsea seeks a permanent successor to Liam Rosenior, Hato’s position in the squad remains uncertain. The club aims to appoint a new manager by the end of the month, providing Hato and his teammates a chance to make a lasting impression. With Xabi Alonso among the potential candidates, the incoming manager’s approach to nurturing young talent will be pivotal in shaping Hato’s future at the club.
The Blues’ managerial decision will not only impact Hato’s development but also the team’s overall strategy and performance in the coming seasons. As Chelsea navigates this transitional phase, the club’s commitment to integrating young talents like Hato will be closely scrutinized by fans and pundits alike.
