In a remarkable achievement for South Shields, three of their players have been recognized in the National League North team of the season. Among them is Ollie Bainbridge, a promising talent on loan from Sunderland, who has made a significant impact during his stint with the Mariners. The team, under the guidance of former Gateshead and MK Dons assistant manager Ian Watson, narrowly missed out on promotion to the National League, falling short in a dramatic title race against AFC Fylde and subsequently losing the play-off final to Kidderminster Harriers.
Ian Watson said: “There is definitely an interest from our side. Obviously Ollie is going to have options during the summer. He’ll be leaving Sunderland so he will have a lot of options and it’s up to him what he’s going to do in terms of exploring different things. But we love him here, he’s been amazing for us, we would love to keep him here and make him a big part of what we are going to try and do at the football club – but I also understand we aren’t the only ones going to try and sign him because he has done so well.”
Ian Watson continued: “He will have opportunities to play elsewhere but we have to try and convince him this is the right thing and I do genuinely think this is the right thing to do to stay here and build here. I think we can develop him and make him better for the future as well.”
The inclusion of Bainbridge, along with captain Robbie Tinkler and top scorer Paul Blackett, who netted 30 league goals, underscores the strength of South Shields’ squad this season. Bainbridge’s performance has not only earned him a spot in the team of the season but has also sparked interest from Watson, who is eager to retain him as a key player for the club’s future endeavors.
The Mariners’ campaign, though falling short of promotion, has been largely positive, and the recognition of these players highlights their contributions. Watson’s comments reflect a strong desire to build on this season’s successes by securing Bainbridge’s talents for the long term. As Bainbridge approaches the end of his contract with Sunderland, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining his next steps, with South Shields hopeful of convincing him to remain a part of their project.
