Leeds United have expressed interest in signing Union Berlin’s centre-back Danilho Doekhi as the summer transfer window approaches. With Doekhi’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, the Dutch defender is expected to be available on a free transfer, attracting attention from several clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt. Leeds, however, are positioning themselves as strong contenders to secure his signature.
Journalist Matthias Koch said: “Union is a haven for footballers like Danilho Doekhi. I somehow never gave up hope that he’d stay. But now he can take the next financial step.”
Hatchard commented: “He’s a perfect fit for the Premier League. Excellent in the air, physically strong. He’s a superb set-play threat. I’d say he’s definitely in keeping with the recent Leeds policy of signing physically robust players that can cope with the Premier League.”
Matthias Koch added: “He’s never injured. Reliable at the back and dangerous on set pieces at the front.”
Doekhi, who has been a key player for Union Berlin since joining in 2022, has impressed with his defensive capabilities and leadership on the pitch. His familiarity with a back three formation aligns well with Leeds’ current tactical setup, which has seen them shift from a back four earlier in the season. This tactical change necessitates bolstering their central defensive options, making Doekhi an ideal candidate.
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke is keen to strengthen his squad as the club aims to solidify their position in the Premier League following their return to the top flight. The Whites have identified the need for a new centre-back, alongside other positions such as a goalkeeper, backup left-back, attacking midfielder, and striker. Doekhi’s attributes, including his aerial prowess, leadership, and physical strength, make him a promising addition to Leeds’ defensive lineup.
At 27 years old, Doekhi is at the peak of his career and faces a significant decision regarding his future. Leeds United are hopeful that Elland Road will be his next destination, providing him with the platform to showcase his talents in the Premier League.
