Daniel Farke
Gabriel Gudmundsson has been instrumental for Leeds United this season, known for his energetic runs down the left flank and solid defensive skills. However, during Sunday’s match, Gudmundsson struggled to make an impact, and his frustration was evident at full-time. It was a tough outing for the player, marking his first experience under the Arch where he ended up on the losing side. Adding to the disappointment, Gudmundsson appeared to be struggling with movement, suggesting a possible leg muscle issue.
Daniel Farke said: “It seems to be a hamstring injury. At least it looks like this. So of course, not great news. We have to assess him right now. Can’t give you a timeframe, but it seems to be a hamstring.”
The potential absence of Gudmundsson poses a challenge for Leeds, as they have James Justin available for the left-wing-back position. However, Justin, not being left-footed, does not offer the same attacking prowess that Farke prefers. Additionally, should Gudmundsson be sidelined for Friday’s game against Burnley, Justin will need to reestablish a partnership on the left flank with Noah Okafor.
Another player of concern is Anton Stach, who had been ruled out until May due to an ankle ligament issue. However, Stach made a surprising return to team training, and Farke decided to include him in the squad for the recent match.
Daniel Farke explained: “On Friday, it was the first time back in team training. Normally, if you’re out for three and a half weeks, two sessions are not enough to take part, but this was a special occasion. Also, Anton is a very special player for us. And for that, we went a bit against our principles and took him into the squad. I think he had played really good. It’s good to have him back right now, and also for him, it will give him confidence in his body again to be able to deliver. But 45 minutes, I was a bit concerned and especially the medical department was a bit concerned when I brought him on. Definitely not one minute longer [was] possible.”
The decision to bring Stach back early reflects his importance to the team. However, Farke acknowledged the medical department’s concerns and the necessity to manage his playing time carefully. As Leeds United prepares for their upcoming fixtures, the fitness of key players like Gudmundsson and Stach will be crucial in maintaining their momentum in the league.
