VAR Penalty
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have expressed their disapproval over the controversial decision not to award Everton a penalty in their recent 2-1 defeat against West Ham United at London Stadium. The incident occurred when Mateus Fernandes appeared to handle the ball in the penalty area while marking Thierno Barry, leaving Everton and their supporters frustrated.
Gary Lineker said: “Did you see that handball? That’s a penalty, isn’t it?” He further added, “[Fernandes] was not only fouling him [Barry] but also his hand moved to the ball. I don’t like the handball law, but that was a penalty all day long.”
Alan Shearer responded: “I just think it’s a ridiculous decision not to give that as a handball. And then for even what I heard about the grappling, it was only one player that was grappling.”
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher agreed with Lineker and Shearer, stating: “I think it’s a penalty. He’s handled the ball. If you take that chance like that. The feeling was that he accidentally caught the ball with his arm. I’m not so sure. I think most penalty handballs are accidental. Everyone knows if your arm is up and it hits it and stops a shot, it’s going to be given.”
The decision has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the consistency of officiating in the Premier League. Everton’s chief executive, Angus Kinnear, is reportedly planning to discuss the matter with officials at the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to address these concerns. The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing issues surrounding the handball law and its interpretation, which continues to frustrate players, managers, and fans alike.
The controversy comes at a crucial time for Everton, who are battling to secure their position in the league. Such decisions could have significant implications on their campaign, adding further pressure on the team and management. As the debate continues, the call for clearer guidelines and consistent application of the rules grows louder within the football community.
