Burnley Women have achieved a significant milestone by securing promotion to the Women’s Super League 2 (WSL2), marking their first appearance in the second tier of women’s football. This emotional triumph has been dedicated to their former manager, Matt Beard, who tragically passed away in September. Beard’s untimely death occurred just a month after he resigned from his position, leaving a lasting impact on the team. Lou Roberts stepped in as interim coach and led the Clarets to success before departing in February. The promotion is a testament to the team’s resilience and determination through challenging times.
Lola Ogunbote said: “It’s just a culmination of a lot of things going our way and the players executing a plan and dealing with what’s been a really challenging season. What’s been great is the fact that this team has shown resilience. They’ve stuck together through thick and thin and they’ve done that on the pitch today.”
Millie Ravening said: “This means so much and it’s for Matt. Matt brought everybody in this club together and every player’s here because of Matt, so today means so much for everybody and we’re just so happy to get it done and for him.”
Wallace said: “It’s all about the players. As staff, we just try and support them, try and give them the best information tactically so they can go and showcase themselves on the pitch. Now it’s all done and that was the message beforehand, just go and do what you’ve been doing all season. The game was a bit slow and Stoke tried to slow it down, but it was just a case of getting the job done. It’s been an amazing all season.”
The promotion to WSL2 is a historic moment for Burnley Women, achieved after years of effort and perseverance. The team’s journey has been marked by emotional highs and lows, with Beard’s legacy serving as a motivating force. During the final match, the players and fans paid tribute to Beard with banners reading “For You Beardy,” highlighting the deep respect and admiration they held for him. Millie Ravening’s two goals were pivotal in securing the title, and her words reflected the collective sentiment of the team. The Clarets’ unbeaten run and impressive defensive record, conceding only five goals, underscore their exceptional performance throughout the season. This achievement not only honors Beard’s memory but also sets a promising foundation for Burnley Women’s future in the WSL2.
