Bournemouth delivered a stunning performance at Vicarage Road, spoiling Watford’s title-winning celebrations with a decisive 4-2 victory. The Dorset side surged to a commanding three-goal lead before Watford managed to pull one back just before halftime. Despite a late goal from the hosts narrowing the deficit, Bournemouth sealed the win with a penalty in the dying moments of the match.
Helen Bleazard said: “I said to the girls, I was like, look, this is Watford’s moment today and credit to them and congratulations. But what a way to go out on a high. I know the belief in the team and I know how good this team is. And yeah, it’s just fine margins that have cost us the league. We’re the only team that have beaten them both times and we fully deserved today. We set up differently.”
Helen Bleazard continued: “I had a feeling no matter who played today, if we executed the game plan correctly, it would work. And they were unbelievable at that. They just knuckled down all week, I threw a new formation at them, and they went, yeah, do you know what, we’re going to do it. And they thoroughly deserved it.”
On the tactical approach, Helen Bleazard said: “I knew that they had good players, certain areas of the pitch they dominate, and it was down to us to make sure that didn’t happen today. And yeah, really, really pleased with the execution because it wasn’t just about nullifying them, it was about showing our strengths in that as well.”
Helen Bleazard added: “I showed them the game plan, showed them the analysis and say, this is how we can nullify them. But when we get it, this is how we have to be. We have to be expansive and we have to be creative. And every single player did that job today.”
Regarding the fast start, Helen Bleazard remarked: “We knew that they would adapt to our change, so we knew we had to fix it early on. So the fact that we got a goal within, I think, four or five minutes was great. Then I think the third goal was from a set piece, which we’d really worked on.”
Bournemouth’s tactical shift to a back four was instrumental in their victory, as they effectively neutralized Watford’s key players while showcasing their own strengths. The early goal set the tone for the match, and the team’s commitment to the game plan was evident throughout. Bleazard’s strategic insight and the players’ execution were pivotal in securing this well-deserved win, highlighting the team’s potential and resilience.
