Jeremy Doku
Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku has set his sights on being recognized as the best winger in the world. Ahead of the FA Cup semi-final, Doku expressed his ambitions and the steps he believes are necessary to achieve this status. Known for his dazzling ability with the ball, Doku became one of the youngest debutants in Anderlecht history at just 16 and has since been working to refine his game at Manchester City.
Jeremy Doku said: “You have to prove, you have to also show that I deserve to be here. Nothing will be given to you. You have to take it. And that was also my mentality. So I wanted just to show my capabilities, what I’m able to do and that’s what I tried to do. So you also have to raise your standards up and raise your quality up. The teammates did as well. They were all nice with me. So I fitted in well.”
Jeremy Doku continued: “I think when they buy players, they know which mentality, which characteristics the players have. And also we have a coach that’s very passionate, pushes us every time. We have experienced players that won a lot who are still hungry. So we’re all driven by that. We all want to win trophies. We all want to be among the best. If you look at every player here, that’s their goal.”
Jeremy Doku added: “I feel like assists, in that area, I’m fine. I feel like I’m doing well in that area because that doesn’t always depend on you. So key passes and assists, I feel like that area that’s all right. I feel like the goals is more… I have to be more in the areas where you can score easy goals, you know, tap-ins and stuff like that.”
Doku’s journey at Manchester City has been marked by both his explosive talent and the challenges of improving his end product. Pep Guardiola has praised Doku for his ability to produce match-winning moments, particularly against top teams like Liverpool and United. However, Guardiola has also noted areas for improvement, particularly in goal-scoring. Doku acknowledges this criticism and is working to emulate the success of former City winger Raheem Sterling by scoring simpler goals.
Despite the focus on his goal-scoring, Doku remains a vital part of Guardiola’s starting XI due to his overall contributions to the team. With the freedom to operate in the final third, Doku understands that goals are crucial to achieving his ambition of being seen as one of the world’s best wingers. His determination to be consistent and reliable for Manchester City is evident as he continues to strive for excellence.
