Tottenham Hotspur are intensifying their efforts to avoid relegation to the Championship by recruiting a Performance Psychologist to join their Performance Team. This strategic move comes after a dramatic match against Brighton, where Xavi Simons’ long-range strike was overshadowed by a stoppage-time equalizer from Georginio Rutter, resulting in a draw that cost Spurs two vital points in their relegation battle.
The club stated: “As part of this ambition, we are seeking an outstanding Performance Psychologist to join our Performance Team. This is a high-impact role embedded within the Men’s First Team environment at Hotspur Way. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will lead the delivery of evidence-based psychological support to elite professional players.”
The club’s current manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has been vocal about the challenges faced by the team and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset.
Roberto De Zerbi said: “My job is not now to change the style of play. I did two or three things with the ball, two or three things without the ball, but the crucial part is not with the ball or without the ball. It’s in our mentality to be positive. We have to find the right energy, the right spirit. When they stay with me during the week, they will find a positive coach because I believe in them. They are human and maybe they are suffering too much. We have to stay all together and close and improve in the details of the football, but to be better as a mentality.”
The inclusion of a Performance Psychologist is aimed at addressing the psychological aspects of the game, which De Zerbi emphasizes as crucial to the team’s success. The club is also dealing with other challenges, such as VAR controversies, selection decisions that have backfired, and a need to improve their home form. These issues, combined with the pressure of transfer dilemmas and nurturing emerging talents, have created a complex environment at Tottenham.
As Tottenham prepares to face Wolves, who have already been relegated, the focus will be on securing a much-needed victory to boost their position in the league. The club’s commitment to strengthening their psychological resilience demonstrates a proactive approach to overcoming their current challenges.
