Mikel Arteta Arsenal
Arsenal is facing a significant injury crisis as they approach a crucial Premier League showdown with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Gunners, led by Mikel Arteta, are currently six points ahead of their closest rivals, although City has a game in hand. Recent weeks have been challenging for Arsenal, with defeats in the Carabao Cup final, an FA Cup exit, and a loss to Bournemouth in the Premier League. However, their aggregate victory over Sporting has kept their hopes of a European and domestic double alive.
Mikel Arteta said: “It is his progression, but hopefully it’s going to be a matter of days and not weeks. But he has to see when he’s loading more, how he responds to that kind of progression.”
The injury to Noni Madueke during the Sporting fixture has added to Arsenal’s woes. Madueke was forced off with a knee problem during the 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium and was absent from the Champions League matchday squad. Arteta remains hopeful for a swift recovery, with a possible return date set for April 19 against Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta said: “He’s another one who is going to push every boundary. He’s out of his boot now, he’s doing quite a lot of exercises already. He’s reacted really well to the surgery, he’s got no pain. It’s more for the medical staff to go a bit further on that. But I’m sure there is a chance to make that period shorter. If there is a person who can do it, I’m sure that’s going to be Mikel again.”
Martin Odegaard, another key player, was also missing from the draw with Sporting due to an issue sustained earlier this month. His absence from training ahead of the Champions League encounter further complicates Arsenal’s preparations. Odegaard is also eyeing a return on April 19.
Additionally, the Italian defender has had his minutes carefully managed due to recurring issues and could make his return against Manchester City. Meanwhile, Mikel Merino, who underwent surgery, is progressing well but is unlikely to feature again this season. Arteta remains optimistic about Merino’s recovery, highlighting his determination to return ahead of schedule, with a possible return date set for May 24.
As Arsenal navigates these injury challenges, the upcoming match against Manchester City will be pivotal in determining their title aspirations. The Gunners will need to rely on their squad depth and resilience to maintain their lead in the Premier League race.
