Nottingham Forest are set to host Porto at the City Ground on Thursday evening in a decisive quarter-final clash, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. The tie is delicately poised at 1-1 following last week’s first-leg draw in Porto. However, Forest manager Pereira faces a selection dilemma as Elliot Anderson’s participation remains uncertain due to personal reasons. Anderson was notably absent from the team’s training session on Wednesday, raising questions about his availability for the crucial encounter.
Vitor Pereira said: “Today, he was not able to train. He has personal problems and we have to respect. We will see (about tomorrow), we need to wait.”
Pereira’s comments highlight the delicate balance he must strike between pursuing European success and ensuring Premier League survival. The manager must carefully consider his squad selection, especially with an important league fixture against Burnley looming on Sunday. Forest’s performance in the first leg against Porto was less than convincing, as they relied on a fortunate own goal from Martim Fernandes to level the score after William Gomes’ opener.
Vitor Pereira said: “We will try to keep going. We will try our best to keep going, with responsibility. Working, working, working and giving confidence to them (the players); giving confidence to take risks.”
Vitor Pereira added: “It is trying to be consistent. To face the two challenges we need to be consistent. In this moment, I need to think about both games. It is important to balance the energy and to face Burnley in our best condition because it will be a tough game again.”
Vitor Pereira continued: “Tomorrow, when we are looking at the first XI and the subs, we have to look at the time for everyone on the pitch, and the potential of extra-time. If you go to extra-time, it is another challenge. But I am positive. We know the game will be very tough. I know them (Porto) very well. We need to play at a better level than we did in the first leg.”
Vitor Pereira concluded: “It is about being resilient. It is about having belief, keeping confidence, believing in our work, in ourselves and in our qualities.”
Pereira’s strategic approach underscores the importance of resilience and belief as Forest prepare for another challenging encounter with Porto. The manager is keenly aware of the need for an improved performance to secure progression in the tournament. As the team gears up for this pivotal match, the focus will be on maintaining consistency and managing player energy effectively, especially with the possibility of extra-time. Forest fans will be hoping for a spirited display that not only advances their European ambitions but also sets a positive tone ahead of their Premier League battle with Burnley.
