Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, Roberto De Zerbi, is keen to revitalize his team’s performance as they gear up to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. With Spurs yet to claim a Premier League win this year, a loss to Sunderland could see them drop into the bottom three, especially if West Ham triumphs over Wolves. The match against Sunderland, scheduled for Sunday, April 12, follows West Ham’s clash against Rob Edwards’ side on Friday, April 10. De Zerbi will have a crucial week to prepare his squad for this significant encounter in the North East.
Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall have emerged as key figures in De Zerbi’s plans. Both players impressed during the international break, with Gray playing a vital role in England Under-21s’ 4-1 victory over Moldova. His goal helped maintain England’s lead in Group G of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers. Gray’s performance at Carrow Road was complemented by goals from Ethan Nwaneri and Romain Esse.
Lee Carsley, England Under-21 boss, said: “He’s going through a lot of minutes at Tottenham under severe pressure and high-pressure situations.” Carsley added: “It’s very difficult. I’ve had the experience of being relegated from the Premier League two years on the bounce. It’s not easy. You live and breathe it literally every minute of the day. And to be at a club like Tottenham, also, where the pressure will be immense with the new stadium and the training ground and the expectation, Archie has thrived in that environment, and hopefully he can keep that up.”
Meanwhile, Lucas Bergvall played a crucial role in Sweden’s World Cup qualification. Coming off the bench in the European play-off final against Poland, Bergvall’s efforts led to a last-minute winner, securing Sweden’s place in Group F alongside Japan, the Netherlands, and Tunisia.
Bergvall commented to Fotbollskanalen: “It’s been tough, but it was incredibly fun to be back and that we won. Yes, it went quickly. But it’s hard to say when you get an injury like that. It varies from person to person how quickly it goes. I was lucky to get back in time.”
Both Gray and Bergvall are expected to feature prominently in Tottenham’s midfield against Sunderland. Their chemistry on the pitch is evident, as Gray noted their mutual trust and ability to handle pressure together.
Gray said: “Me and Lucas are really close. Every time we’re on the pitch together, we just trust each other 100 per cent. Even if there is pressure on us, we know we can play to each other and we can handle that pressure.”
As Tottenham prepares for the crucial fixture, fans can anticipate an action-packed match filled with drama and significant talking points. With De Zerbi at the helm, the team hopes to turn their fortunes around and climb the Premier League table.
