Roberto De Zerbi
Tottenham Hotspur has officially announced Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach, following his confirmation on Tuesday. The 46-year-old Italian has agreed to a lucrative five-year deal, reportedly making him the third-highest-paid manager in the Premier League. De Zerbi, who had been without a club since departing Marseille in February, faces the immediate challenge of securing Tottenham’s Premier League status, with the team currently just one point above the relegation zone and winless in the league since December.
Roberto De Zerbi said: “Hello to all the Tottenham fans. I am very happy to stay here with you. For me, it’s a very [big] honour and I’m very proud to be your coach. I want to give my best. I want to stay for a long time in this big club. See you soon.”
De Zerbi’s first match as Spurs head coach will be against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on April 12. With Tottenham’s early exits from both the FA Cup and Champions League, De Zerbi will have an extended period to work with the squad on the training pitch. Despite the team’s current struggles, which include a relegation battle, De Zerbi’s previous success at Brighton, where he was praised for his attacking style, suggests he will look to implement a similar approach at Tottenham.
Roberto De Zerbi said: “In all my discussions with the club’s leadership, their ambition for the future has been clear – to build a team capable of reaching great achievements, and to do that playing a style of football that excites and inspires our supporters. I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give everything to deliver it. I’m looking forward to getting out on the training pitch and working with these players to achieve that.”
Tottenham’s sporting director, Johan Lange, expressed his satisfaction with De Zerbi’s appointment, emphasizing the club’s long-standing interest in him.
Johan Lange said: “Roberto was our number one target for the summer and we are very pleased to be able to bring him in now.”
De Zerbi’s hiring marks a pivotal moment for Tottenham as they aim to navigate the challenges of the current season while laying the groundwork for future success. His commitment to a long-term vision aligns with the club’s ambitions, and his track record suggests he could be the catalyst needed to inspire a turnaround at Spurs.
