Kenni Thompson’s remarkable goal from a corner kick secured a vital 1-0 victory for Bournemouth against Plymouth in the cup final. The Cherries’ defense held strong, preventing Plymouth from equalizing in the last ten minutes, thus clinching the cup for Helen Bleazard’s side. This triumph was particularly sweet for Bournemouth, coming just a week after a league defeat to the same opponents.
Kenni Thompson said: “Yeah, [it’s] incredible. We won the Plate last season and we were disappointed to go out so early. I’m so proud of everyone.” Reflecting on her goal, she added, “It’s been a while since it’s actually gone in, but yeah, I’ve tried it a couple of times this season and it’s hit the crossbar. Starting off strong is what we wanted to do, and I think we did that defensively. But to get a goal so early on was a big push for us and to then, it was difficult. They played really well.”
Thompson continued: “We’ve got the structure, we’ve got the belief in ourselves, and we were able to hang on for so long.” She also commented on the significance of the win following their recent league loss, stating, “We definitely knew we needed to bounce back from last weekend. It was a difficult one to take, but anything can happen still. We’ve still got that belief in ourselves that we can keep going and push to the end. It’s going to be a battle between two really great teams, but we back ourselves all the way and we’ll be pushing and fighting until the last second of the season.”
Thompson’s goal, scored directly from a corner, was a testament to her skill and persistence, having attempted similar shots throughout the season. The early goal provided Bournemouth with the momentum needed to maintain their defensive solidity against a determined Plymouth side. The victory not only avenged their recent league setback but also reinforced their confidence as they continue to vie for a top-two finish and a chance at promotion to the WSL2. The Cherries’ resilience and strategic gameplay were pivotal in this hard-fought win, showcasing their potential to achieve their season’s ambitions.
