Thomas Tuchel
Thomas Tuchel, known for his candid assessments, had previously cast doubt on Marcus Rashford’s ability to reach his potential as a world-class player. However, recent developments suggest a change in the German manager’s perspective, as Rashford’s performance against Uruguay has earned him praise and a starting position.
Thomas Tuchel said: “Potential is a dangerous word with high-level sports, because you have to reach your personal best on a regular basis – that is demanded on this kind of level and that is the challenge for him.”
Tuchel’s decision to start Rashford against Uruguay was influenced by the player’s impressive attitude and work rate during training sessions. Despite not having started a game for an extended period, Rashford’s efforts on the training ground did not go unnoticed.
Thomas Tuchel said: “He tries. He tries hard. He hasn’t started a game for a long, long time. So we gave him this because I spoke to him. I was very impressed with the training yesterday. It was a defensive training and he was very strong with Djed Spence on the side. He worked hard and I think he worked very hard. He just can’t get the goal that he maybe needs to be in full confidence. I’m happy with the way he tried and it was a constant threat.”
Rashford’s most recent goal for England came against Serbia last September, and despite limited playing time at Barcelona, he has managed to regain Tuchel’s favor. The match against Uruguay was viewed as an audition, with players like Dom Solanke and James Garner also earning recognition for their performances.
Thomas Tuchel added: “I was looking forward to that match, I tell you. I was looking forward because we had some good training sessions and the group was a lively group. We said to the group today do we expect everything to be perfect? Yeah, maybe yes, because we always do.”
The England squad approached the Uruguay fixture with a focus on individual performances, knowing that their efforts could influence future selections. Tuchel’s satisfaction with the match and training sessions indicates that Rashford and his teammates met the expectations set before them. The atmosphere in the dressing room post-match was positive, reflecting the team’s collective effort and Tuchel’s evolving confidence in his players.
