James Garner
Everton midfielder James Garner made a significant impact on his England debut, showcasing his skills in a 1-1 draw against Uruguay at Wembley Stadium. The 25-year-old midfielder, who has been a standout performer for Everton this season, earned his first senior cap in an experimental lineup under England manager Thomas Tuchel. Garner’s performance was marked by his ability to create chances, win tackles, and execute precise passes in the final third, leaving a positive impression despite England’s overall underwhelming display.
James Garner said: “I feel like I did all right. It was a very good game to be a part of. My debut [came] against a very good team. The last 5/10 minutes was a bit crazy but it was a good game. I think we had the majority of the ball but didn’t create as much as we would like. Maybe the result was fair in the end.”
Thomas Tuchel said: “I am very happy, he is our mini-Valverde. He is getting there and he played very, very good, I was quite sure that he would play good because he has this natural confidence and he is very physical, he won a lot of balls, I think there are some situations when he can be a little bit more open in the body positions and drive through midfield with a little bit more confidence. I think in the last 10 minutes of the first half he was involved in some ball losses that cost us a bit of confidence but overall I was very impressed with the way he trained and the way he behaved and the way he played.”
Garner’s debut was a testament to his development and versatility, attributes that have been nurtured under Everton manager David Moyes. Moyes has been instrumental in Garner’s progression, advocating for his inclusion in the national team. Garner’s adaptability has been evident as he has filled various roles for Everton, including covering longstanding issues at full-back. His performances in key matches, such as victories over Manchester United and Aston Villa, have highlighted his ability to rise to challenges, earning him the trust of both Moyes and Tuchel.
Garner’s contribution to Everton’s success this season has been significant, with standout performances against former club Nottingham Forest, where he outshone other England hopefuls. His efforts have not only bolstered Everton’s campaign but also demonstrated the potential for international recognition through club success. As Garner continues to develop, his England debut marks a promising step in his career, with the potential for further contributions to the national team in the future.
