James Trafford
Newcastle United had reportedly shown interest in James Trafford last summer while the goalkeeper was still at Burnley. However, Trafford opted to join Manchester City, who exercised a buy-back clause to secure his services at the Etihad Stadium for £27 million. Trafford’s performance was pivotal in City’s recent Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal, where he delivered a series of crucial saves to maintain a clean sheet in the 2-0 win. Despite this success, questions about his long-term future at the club remain.
Alan Shearer said: “It wouldn’t surprise me. It was almost done and dusted last summer and then, for whatever reason, City came back in with a buy-back clause. I guess he thought that he was going there as a No.1 [goalkeeper], and clearly other things took over with Donnarumma [moving to City]. I would like to think that Newcastle would be back in for him.”
James Trafford said: “Yeah, it means a lot to have his [Pep Guardiola’s] faith, and it’s a testament to how I believed in myself, and how I acted in training, when I’ve been brought in for club games. Every time that I play I just give it my best shot. No illusions, it hasn’t been easy at all. It’s been really tough at times, but I have a really good set of people around me. My teammates and my coaches have been brilliant. They have kept me going and given me individual goals. It’s down to them.”
Trafford’s return to the City lineup has been marked by his commitment and resilience, despite limited appearances this season. His standout performance at Wembley has only intensified speculation about his future, especially with the presence of Gianluigi Donnarumma at the club. The goalkeeper’s ability to step up in crucial moments has not gone unnoticed, and his future decisions will likely be influenced by his ambition to secure a regular starting position. As the summer transfer window approaches, clubs like Newcastle United may renew their interest, given Trafford’s proven capabilities and potential.
