Leeds United
The Premier League has announced sanctions against Leeds United for breaching Rule L.33 related to kick-off and re-start obligations on nine separate occasions this season. The breaches occurred both at Elland Road and during away matches, resulting in fines ranging from £10,000 to £120,000. The club has accepted the penalties and issued an apology for the infractions.
The Premier League stated: “The Premier League has entered into a sanction agreement with Leeds United FC after the club accepted it had breached Premier League Rule L.33 in relation to kick-off and re-start obligations on nine occasions this season.”
The fines were imposed following delays in matches against various teams, including Everton, Newcastle United, Fulham, Burnley, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, and Brentford. The initial breach occurred on the first day of the season against Everton, where a two-minute delay in kick-off and a two-minute, 25-second delay in the restart resulted in a £10,000 fine. This pattern continued, with fines escalating based on the duration and frequency of delays.
The statement continued: “Fines for the breaches, which were accepted by United, range from £10,000 to £120,000.”
The most significant penalty was a £120,000 fine for a delay against Fulham on January 17, which included an additional £20,000 for repeat offenses. The Premier League has capped fines for delays of up to two minutes and 30 seconds at £250,000, indicating the seriousness of maintaining punctuality in match schedules.
Leeds United’s acceptance of these fines and their subsequent apology highlights the club’s acknowledgment of the importance of adhering to league regulations. The club’s willingness to comply with the sanctions reflects a commitment to improving operational procedures to prevent future breaches.
The financial repercussions of these delays serve as a reminder to all clubs about the importance of time management and adherence to Premier League rules. As the season progresses, Leeds United will need to ensure stricter compliance to avoid further penalties.
