In a challenging night for Nottingham Forest, the team succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Danish side Midtjylland at the City Ground in the first leg of their last 16 tie. The match, played under torrential rain, saw Forest create numerous opportunities but ultimately fail to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, just down the road, 19-year-old Manchester United fan and darts player Luke Littler suffered a semi-final defeat to Luke Humphries at the Motorpoint Arena. Littler appeared to mock Forest during his walk-on by gesturing a “zero” with his fist, seemingly in reference to the Reds’ score, followed by a double thumbs down to the cameras.
Vitor Pereira said: “The ball didn’t want to obey and go inside the goal. Every time someone was in front of the ball or we had the goalkeeper or a player in front. But we tried. We had 22 or 23 shots. It is football, they created two chances and scored a goal.”
Vitor Pereira added: “Sometimes you can produce, you can play and you can create chances, but in the end I cannot say to my players they didn’t do everything to win the game, because they did it. They tried everything to score a goal. A defeat is football. It is a cruel, difficult day. But it is important to keep the spirit and the mentality, and to recover to play the next game. The players are frustrated, of course. But I am proud of them, because they tried everything with the spirit I want to see and with quality. With the rain, creating a lot of chances to score was not easy. We didn’t concede a lot to this team. I only remember them having two chances in the game. I’m proud of our supporters because they believed from the first minute until the end and they tried to help the team. It is half-time and we will see what we can do in the next game.”
Despite the loss, Nottingham Forest’s manager expressed pride in his team’s efforts and resilience. The Reds dominated much of the match, registering over 20 shots, yet were unable to convert these chances into goals. Midtjylland capitalized on their limited opportunities, with Cho Guesung scoring a late header to secure the victory. The defeat leaves Forest needing to overturn the result in the second leg to keep their continental ambitions alive.
The night was equally disappointing for Littler, who faced defeat in his semi-final match. His gestures during the walk-on were interpreted as a jibe at Forest’s performance, adding a layer of rivalry to the evening’s events. As the Reds prepare for the return leg, they will need to channel the frustration of the night into a spirited comeback to advance in the competition.
