Sunderland faced an unexpected FA Cup exit at the hands of Port Vale, a team significantly lower in the English football hierarchy. The match, held at Vale Park, saw the Black Cats struggling to find their rhythm on a challenging pitch, ultimately resulting in a surprising defeat. Ben Waine, a Newcastle United fan, scored the decisive goal, marking his achievement with a celebration reminiscent of Alan Shearer’s iconic one-handed gesture.
Gary Lineker said: “Well, well, Port Vale. Incredible. You’ve got a little smile on your face, Alan.”
Alan Shearer responded: “Ah, no. I mean, we couldn’t have Sunderland going further than Newcastle… Yeah, it was… I mean, even just looking at the pitch, we said earlier, didn’t we, about the pitches at that level. They’re bottom of League One. So, yeah, brilliant for them. They put on a show, they reacted to the atmosphere, and I thought they were worthy winners, to be honest.”
Gary Lineker continued: “I thought they did remarkably well, considering their position. Obviously, they only just got past Bristol City because they had a waterlogged pitch and it was delayed until this week. Ben Waine scored in that one and then did it again, and his celebration, Alan, did you notice?”
Alan Shearer said: “I saw that, yes… I heard his interview and he said, ‘Well, I never really saw him live because I was a bit too young’, I’m thinking, ‘Oh, ******* ****!’. Anyway, yeah, but I’m really pleased for him, it was really good.”
Gary Lineker added: “Massively important, yeah, he did the Shearer celebration, he’s a Newcastle fan as well, obviously, and to get one over on Sunderland, it would have meant a lot to him.”
Alan Shearer concluded: “Absolutely, yeah, I wonder how long he’d been planning that one. Good for him, I’m pleased for him.”
The match was a testament to Port Vale’s resilience and ability to capitalize on the challenging conditions. Despite the difficult playing surface, Port Vale managed to put on a commendable performance, showcasing their determination and tactical acumen. The victory was particularly sweet for Ben Waine, whose allegiance to Newcastle United added an extra layer of satisfaction to the triumph over Sunderland.
For Sunderland, the defeat was a setback, highlighting the challenges of competing on less-than-ideal pitches and the unpredictability of cup competitions. The loss serves as a reminder of the importance of adaptability and focus, especially when facing lower-league opponents who are eager to prove their mettle.
