Chelsea secured a dramatic 4-2 victory over Wrexham in the FA Cup, with former Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho playing a key role. Garnacho scored the third goal during the additional 30-minute period, setting Chelsea on course for a hard-fought win. Manager Liam Rosenior made nine changes to his squad, reflecting the depth required to compete on multiple fronts. The Blues now prepare for a significant Champions League encounter against Paris Saint-Germain, traveling to Paris for the first leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday.
Liam Rosenior said: “In football you need a full squad to win trophies because we play every three days. You have to trust in everyone, and we have great players. Now we’re in the quarter-finals, and we will try to win the FA Cup. It’s always good to win a trophy. We will recover now and be ready for Wednesday. We have a team to win, so we will try to do that.”
Chelsea’s match against Wrexham was a rollercoaster, with the Blues twice coming from behind. They were initially lackluster, fortunate to be level at halftime after Sam Smith’s opener was canceled out by an Arthur Okonkwo own goal. Wrexham regained the lead through Callum Doyle in the 78th minute, but Josh Acheampong equalized once more for Chelsea. The turning point came with the sending-off of George Dobson, which allowed Chelsea to capitalize and secure the win in extra time, thanks to goals from Garnacho and Joao Pedro. Wrexham was denied a late goal due to a tight offside call at 3-2.
Liam Rosenior added: “It’s an incredible win. I think it was one of our hardest games of the season so far. We have to be ready for everything when you play in this type of game. We have to be ready for every moment, and it was even more difficult going into extra time, but we saw it through. We’re proud today, and we’re in the next round.”
Chelsea’s victory over Wrexham was a testament to their resilience and squad depth, crucial attributes as they continue to compete in multiple competitions. The focus now shifts to their Champions League campaign, where they face a formidable opponent in Paris Saint-Germain. With confidence high following their FA Cup triumph, Chelsea will aim to carry this momentum into their European challenge.
