Port Vale striker Andre Gray has issued a warning to Sunderland as the two teams prepare to face off in the FA Cup on Sunday. Gray, who has extensive experience on the big stage, including reaching the FA Cup final with Watford in 2019, boasts 115 Premier League appearances and 13 international caps for Jamaica. Although he has yet to find the net in seven appearances for his new club, Gray played a crucial role in assisting the extra-time winner against Bristol City, setting up this much-anticipated fixture.
Andre Gray said: “Obviously I have been there and done it, but it is still a big occasion. It is like a sort of carnival atmosphere (around the club), and I am sure the stadium will be bouncing on Sunday – and that is why you play football, for occasions like this. It is always special. You realise that they are stronger, they are faster and smarter. It is a different level, but the good thing is that the reason we love the game is for moments like this – the giant-killings.”
Gray continued: “It is always possible and that is why FA Cup games are different from regular Premier League games. We have just got to use that to our advantage and see where it takes us.”
He added: “It (the message) is just to be calm I think. Don’t let the occasion get to you too much, because you end up running out of steam quite quickly – but you have to enjoy it as well because it might not ever happen again.”
The upcoming match presents a stark contrast between the two sides. Sunderland, fresh from a 1-0 victory over Leeds United, currently sit 11th in the Premier League table. In contrast, Port Vale remains at the bottom of the League One standings, despite a recent mini-unbeaten run that saw them collect five points from their last three matches.
Sunday’s fixture is particularly significant for Port Vale, marking their first appearance in the fifth round of the FA Cup in three decades. For the team and its supporters, this match is more than just a break from their League One challenges; it represents a rare opportunity to create memorable moments against a top-tier opponent. Gray’s experience and leadership will be pivotal as Vale aims to capitalize on the unique nature of FA Cup ties, where underdogs often thrive.
