Mikel Arteta Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta provided an update on the club’s injury situation following their recent match against Mansfield Town. The Gunners, who are in the midst of a demanding schedule, opted to rest several key players ahead of their Champions League fixture against Bayer Leverkusen. This decision comes as Arsenal aims to manage player fitness and maintain their push for multiple trophies this season.
Mikel Arteta said: “Well, they had issues and they’ve been carrying issues. And the amount of games that we are playing, it’s obviously super demanding. It was the only time to try to make sure that we can clean those issues that they’re having to start the next sequence of two weeks before the break in the best possible way. And we had to make those decisions.”
Arteta’s comments underscore the challenges Arsenal faces with player fitness amid a congested fixture list. Declan Rice, who was unable to complete the recent Premier League victory over Chelsea, managed to start against Brighton, playing a crucial role in securing a 1-0 lead. However, the injury list has grown, with Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori both leaving the pitch with concerns during the match against Mansfield Town. Trossard’s exit before halftime, holding his upper left leg, suggested a potential hip or adductor issue.
Arteta explained: “Both of them, they had little niggles. And I knew that this could be a possibility, especially in the conditions that we’re playing today.”
Despite these setbacks, Arteta appeared to downplay the severity of the injuries to Trossard and Calafiori, indicating that the issues were minor. Meanwhile, Ben White remains absent, and Mikel Merino is a long-term absentee. Myles Lewis-Skelly, who was suspended for the Mansfield trip, will be available for the upcoming fixture against Leverkusen.
Arsenal’s schedule remains intense, with four more fixtures, including two against Leverkusen, a home game against Everton, and the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley, before the international break. The club’s pursuit of the Quadruple is still on track, and they will learn their FA Cup quarter-final opponents in Monday’s draw on TNT Sports. Arsenal fans have much to look forward to as the team continues to excel under Arteta’s leadership, competing strongly in the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup.
