Leeds United has issued a statement urging respect and understanding from its supporters during their upcoming FA Cup fifth-round match against Norwich City. The club emphasized the importance of pausing the game to allow players observing Ramadan, including their striker Joel Piroe, to break their fast. This comes after an incident during a recent Premier League match against Manchester City, where some fans booed during a similar pause, drawing national attention and criticism.
Leeds United Football Club stated: “Leeds United Football Club are asking for respect to be shown during this Sunday’s FA Cup fifth round tie with Norwich City, when play will be paused to allow players observing Ramadan to break their fast, including our own striker, Joel Piroe.”
The statement continued: “A pause also took place during our Premier League fixture with Manchester City last weekend, which led to booing from some supporters which was disappointing and unexpected.”
“We would like to thank everyone who has taken time in recent days to get in touch with us and provide feedback, including our Supporter Advisory Board, in order for us to understand exactly why this situation arose against Manchester City and the lessons which can be learnt moving forwards,” the club added.
The statement further emphasized: “Football still has a long way to go in eradicating stains on the game, including racism, homophobia, tragedy chanting and the sickening Jimmy Saville taunts our own supporters are subjected to at every match from opposition fans. As a club, we will continue to work to ensure that in time, these issues cease to exist.”
The incident has sparked discussions about the broader issues of respect and inclusivity within football. Leeds United’s call for respect highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the sport in addressing discrimination and inappropriate behavior among fans. The club’s proactive approach in seeking feedback and learning from recent events demonstrates its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and respectful environment for all players and supporters.
The upcoming match against Norwich City will serve as a critical moment for Leeds United to reinforce its message of respect and understanding. As the club continues to address these challenges, it remains committed to working towards a future where such issues are eradicated from the game.
