Manchester City faced a challenging night as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. Despite taking the lead twice through Antoine Semenyo and Rodri, City were left frustrated by a series of refereeing decisions, including a denied penalty appeal involving Erling Haaland. The incident occurred when Haaland appeared to be brought down by Forest’s goalkeeper, Matz Sels, but referee Darren England and VAR upheld the on-field decision, leaving City without a penalty.
Gallagher said: “If I were a forward and pushed the ball past the ‘keeper like that and the ‘keeper hits me and doesn’t get the ball, then I would expect a penalty.”
Bernardo Silva said: “We’re quite used to it this season because all 50/50s have gone against us. It’s the reality. I’ve just watched, for example, the Erling incident and, for me, it’s a penalty. Some might have a different opinion. What can Erling do? As I said, we’re used to it. We know how it works. For us, our job is just to be better because these things we cannot control. What we can control is our own performances and that’s what we need to focus on.”
Pep Guardiola said: “I always believe that we have to do it much better so the officials don’t intervene. It’s our responsibility to do it better, we don’t rely on them. Nothing more to say, I said it in the past.”
The match was marked by City’s frustration over the officiating, particularly regarding the penalty appeal involving Haaland. Former Premier League referee Gallagher expressed his disagreement with the decision, suggesting that a penalty should have been awarded. However, City captain Bernardo Silva emphasized the need for the team to focus on their performance rather than the decisions they cannot control.
Pep Guardiola, known for his pragmatic approach, reiterated the importance of improving the team’s performance to avoid relying on refereeing decisions. Despite the contentious calls, Guardiola maintained that the responsibility lies with the team to perform better and not depend on officials.
In another incident, City’s appeals for a penalty following a collision between Rodri and Forest’s Elliot Anderson were dismissed. Gallagher supported this decision, noting that the contact was initiated by the City player.
The draw leaves Manchester City reflecting on missed opportunities and the impact of refereeing decisions. As they continue their campaign, the focus will be on enhancing their performance to minimize the influence of external factors.
