Andy Morrison, the former Manchester City captain, recently took to social media platform X to share a poignant update about his health. The 55-year-old revealed he is battling a neurological disorder caused by a virus affecting the facial nerve, which could require up to a year for full recovery. Morrison, who made 37 appearances for City after joining from Huddersfield Town in 1998, is remembered for his pivotal role in the club’s ascent to the Premier League.
Andy Morrison said: “It can take six-to-eight weeks, it can over a year for recovery but there’s a 70 percent chance of full recovery… I’ll get through this, this is day nine, it’s probably been the toughest day yet. Just to give an update, I’ll touch base every couple of weeks to let people know where I’m up to. Thanks for listening, cheers.”
Morrison’s tenure at Manchester City was marked by significant achievements, including leading the team to win the playoffs to the old Division One in the 1998-99 season, followed by promotion to the Premier League the next year. Prior to his time at City, Morrison had a successful stint with Plymouth Argyle, making 129 appearances before moving to Blackburn Rovers. He also had loan spells with Blackpool, Crystal Palace, and Sheffield United.
In recognition of his contributions, Morrison was named a club ambassador in 2013 and was celebrated as one of Manchester City’s best-ever captains, alongside legends Roy Paul and Tony Brook. His influence extended beyond his playing career, as he found success in management with Connah’s Quay Nomads in Wales, leading them to consecutive Welsh top-flight titles and Welsh cup victories.
The football community has rallied around Morrison during this challenging time. Connah’s Quay Nomads expressed their support in a statement, saying: “Andy, everyone at Connah’s Quay Nomads is always by your side. We wish you a speedy recovery, and hope you get well soon, Jock.” Similarly, Plymouth Argyle and Blackpool extended their well-wishes, underscoring the widespread respect and admiration for Morrison across the football world.
