In Liam Rosenior’s first match as Chelsea’s head coach, the team faced an unexpected challenge as Alejandro Garnacho was met with jeers whenever he had possession against League One side Charlton Athletic. The 21-year-old, who joined Chelsea last summer for £40 million, seemed to be unpopular even against lower league opponents. Rosenior expressed his confusion over the negative reception and speculated that playing for a club of Chelsea’s stature might be a contributing factor to the animosity.
Rosenior said: “It happened at Charlton as well, I don’t understand. I don’t understand why it happens, maybe because he’s such a threat. You have to rise above that and not take notice of it. That’s the best way for me. I don’t think you use it as fuel. Your motivation should be there anyway to perform. All Garna needs to do is keep working really hard because his ability is not in question.”
Rosenior continued: “No, it doesn’t [affect Garnacho]. It’s not something that we’ve spoken about. We’ve had many conversations, but opposition fans booing you normally means you’re a threat for the opposition.”
The former Manchester United winger has faced criticism for his off-field behavior during his time at Old Trafford, which included controversial social media activity and conflicts with the head coach. Despite this, Rosenior believes that the perception of Garnacho is misguided and that he is a dedicated player.
Rosenior said: “He’s a great kid. He’s had a very difficult thing happen in his life recently as well. And rather than tell me about that, he wanted to put himself forward for a game and told me after the game where he had to go back home. People make judgments based on the way people look.”
Rosenior is optimistic about Garnacho’s future at Chelsea, emphasizing his potential and commitment to improvement.
Rosenior stated: “He’s got huge ability. For any young player, the biggest thing is to be challenged on your consistency level. But he’s shown really, really good signs in terms of, not just in training, his engagement in meetings, that he’s on a really, really good track.”
Despite the initial challenges, Rosenior remains confident in Garnacho’s ability to succeed and is determined to support him in overcoming the negative perceptions. The coach’s faith in the young winger highlights a promising future for Garnacho at Stamford Bridge.
