VAR NO GOAL

Leeds United’s encounter with Sunderland at Elland Road was overshadowed by contentious officiating decisions, with the visitors benefiting from two crucial VAR calls. The match saw Sunderland awarded a penalty after VAR adjudged Ethan Ampadu to have handled the ball, while Leeds’ appeals for a penalty were dismissed when Luke O’Nien appeared to pull Pascal Struijk to the ground during a set piece.
Jermaine Beckford said: “I’m so bemused by how the referee and VAR officials haven’t given a penalty. It’s clear as day. You can’t see much from that angle but the other angle, O’Nien on Pascal Struijk, look at that. Arms around the neck and drags him to the floor. How on earth is that not a penalty. It’s absolutely embarrassing.”
Beckford continued: “Absolute nonsense, what? It wasn’t a clear and obvious error? Remember you’re on television Jermaine. That was clear. Calm down Jermaine,” former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman joked, though his words seemed to have little impact on the ex-Whites striker. “O’Nien had his arms around Pascal Struijk’s neck,” Beckford persisted. “It was a blatant penalty, that is absolute nonsense. You can watch it back 100 times and 100 times out of 100, it’s a penalty. There’s no shadow of doubt. It’s blatantly obvious. O’Nien is not looking at the ball. Look at that! Getting him in a headlock is akin to a WWE match. It shouldn’t belong on a football pitch. That’s what happens but I do feel sorry for the referee and the staff because it’s going on so much now. We’ve gone over the threshold.”
Steve McManaman said: “We both agreed, this grappling in the penalty area, they cannot cope with everything that’s going on. It’s just gone too far, I think Michael Carrick said it. It’s gone too far now and it’s not enjoyable to watch. I think we need to get a grip of it we really do.”
The match was further marred by Sunderland defender Luke O’Nien’s involvement in multiple incidents, including an altercation with Sean Longstaff over a towel used to dry the ball, and receiving a yellow card for kicking a spare ball towards the match ball during a Leeds attack. These incidents, coupled with the controversial VAR decisions, left a sour taste for Leeds United fans and players alike.
The debate over VAR’s role and effectiveness in the Premier League continues to rage on, with calls for clearer guidelines and more consistent application of rules. As the league progresses, the scrutiny on VAR decisions is likely to intensify, especially in high-stakes matches where every decision can significantly impact the outcome.
