David Moyes
Gary Neville has called on Everton’s owners to provide substantial backing to manager David Moyes in the upcoming summer transfer window. The former player-turned-pundit praised Moyes for his remarkable work with the current squad, despite their recent narrow defeat to Manchester United. Neville emphasized that while Everton possesses a group of players with positive attributes, they lack the quality needed to challenge for higher positions in the Premier League.
Gary Neville said: “They were game, they were dogged, they were organised, they got beat by a sensational goal from a counter-attack the full length of the pitch. It was always going to be about one moment of quality or one mistake. David Moyes, at the end of the season, will just want a higher contribution from his board and the ownership. He needs some players, doesn’t he?”
Everton, currently sitting ninth in the league, are within reach of European qualification spots after enduring four successive relegation battles. Despite spending over £100 million in the club’s first summer transfer window since the Friedkin Group takeover, Moyes’ squad still requires significant reinforcement. The club’s recent investments, including Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and the injured Jack Grealish, have added Premier League-proven quality. However, Everton’s previous seasons’ struggles have largely led them to target prospects who can develop their talent within an improving side.
Neville continued: “It’s not a spectacular team. They have got a very good set of pros who put a real shift in, which is a great quality. You can’t criticise any of those lads out on that pitch tonight. You can’t. You can see they’re giving everything. They just need those three or four players. Now, I know every team needs three or four players but if they had an Mbeumo… a player who seems to exist at other clubs. They have got [Iliman] Ndiaye down here, he is lively and good but they need two or three players who can give them that bit of quality to go with the solidity and reliability of the other lads that they have got.”
Neville highlighted the need for Everton to recruit players who can provide the spark and creativity lacking in their current lineup. He believes that with the right additions, the team could rise to challenge for positions as high as seventh or eighth in the league. The pundit stressed the importance of effective recruitment and the necessity for Moyes to receive the backing he deserves from the club’s ownership. Everton fans, according to Neville, deserve a team that can consistently compete at a higher level.
In conclusion, while Everton has shown progress this season, the need for further investment in quality players is evident. The club’s ownership must heed Neville’s call and support Moyes in building a team capable of achieving greater success in the Premier League.
