Chelsea’s recent Premier League clash against Burnley at Stamford Bridge saw an unexpected turn of events, as the Blues squandered a chance to secure a comfortable victory. Despite Joao Pedro’s early goal setting the stage for a dominant performance, Chelsea’s inability to maintain momentum allowed Burnley to claw back and secure a draw in the closing moments.
Liam Rosenior said: “From the first goal, we lacked incision when we had control. I want incision. I want us to create wave after wave of attack. We were too safe in our possession. When you give a team, any team, a one-goal advantage, anything can happen. The red card happens, you’re down to 10 men. We knew their biggest threat with [James] Ward-Prowse on the pitch was set plays. We went as big as we possibly could because that was the only way they could score with 10 men. I think the frustration is more the last two home games. From being in winning positions and being in control of the game to not win the two games, that’s the biggest frustration. It’s not a blame on an individual.”
Rosenior added: “Anyone watching the game, it’s not good enough for a club of this level. We need to be the better team in every game. We need to win games of football. I know what the answer is and we will address it in the week. There’s an inquest after every game whether we win or lose. I’m learning about the players. I’m learning about the people you can lean on when things aren’t going your way and you need to see a game out. That’s something we need to address very quickly.”
Chelsea’s performance was marked by a lack of incisiveness, as highlighted by manager Liam Rosenior. The Blues initially took the lead through Joao Pedro, but their failure to capitalize on further opportunities allowed Burnley to stay in the game. A pivotal moment came when Malo Gusto attempted a no-look cross, which was intercepted, leading to Burnley’s equalizer during stoppage time. This mistake underscored a mentality issue within the Chelsea squad, as they failed to maintain control and secure the win.
The draw against Burnley is part of a concerning trend for Chelsea, who have struggled to close out games from winning positions in recent home matches. Rosenior’s comments reflect his frustration with the team’s inability to assert dominance and secure victories. The manager emphasized the need for improvement and expressed his determination to address these issues in the upcoming week. Chelsea will need to find consistency and resilience if they are to meet the expectations of a club of their stature.
